Wounds and getting patched up

What happens when you go down, how wounds work after a fight, and how to treat, stabilize and heal them.

For players

This guide covers getting hurt: going down in a fight, the wound you may carry afterwards, and how you and others patch it up. Read it after a hard fight, or when someone nearby needs a healer. Each rule is a per-sim choice, so your sim may not use all of them.

Going down

When your HP reaches 0 in a fight, you are downed and your titler shows PLAYER DOWN. While you are downed:

  • Your turns are skipped.
  • You can’t flee or disengage, and you make no reactions.
  • Any grapple you are in ends, and nobody can grab you.
  • If your sim uses spell concentration, your lasting spells end.

A heal aimed at you, from an ability or an item, brings you back above 0 HP, and your turns come back. If your sim has revive abilities, one can stand a downed ally up on a little HP, once a fight per ally.

A side with everyone downed is out. See After a fight for what follows, such as looting.

If your sim uses them, some rules keep you standing:

  • No downing before Round 2: a hit that would down you in the Surprise Round or Round 1 leaves you on 1 HP. Chat says so.
  • A damage cap in those rounds: one attack can take at most part of your max HP.
  • Last Stand, or an ability like it: while it lasts, a hit that would down you leaves you on 1 HP.

The wound you get

If your sim uses it: The rest of this guide is about wound tiers. Without them, your sim may give a simple wound at the end of a fight that wears off after a set time. There is nothing to treat, and leaving early gives no wound.

Your wound is picked when the fight ends for you: when it ends, or when you leave, flee or are kicked. It is never picked during a fight.

  • Your sim sets a list of tiers, each with an HP range. Your tier comes from how low your HP is at that moment. A range can be a number of HP or a share of your max HP.
  • Chat usually announces the wound.
  • A worse wound replaces the one you have and starts afresh, losing any treatment or stabilizing. A lighter or equal one leaves yours as it is.
  • If your sim treats downed as critical, going down at any point gives you the 0 HP tier, however far you were healed afterwards.
  • If your sim uses bleed-out, Bleeding and Burning still to come when the fight ends can take you to 0 HP. You then count as downed.

What a wound does

  • Your max HP is lower, by a set amount or a percentage.
  • Every skill is lower by the tier’s penalty. That includes your medical skill, so a wounded healer gives slower recoveries.
  • Your titler shows the wound and its timer.
  • If your sim checks skills or stats before you equip gear, those checks ignore wounds.

The penalties last until the wound is gone, even while it is being treated. Your wound also goes with you to other sims. Where wounds aren’t used, the Status page still shows it, but it can’t be treated there.

Timers

Each tier has its own timer, in hours your sim sets. It counts real time, so it runs while you are offline. When an untreated wound’s time is up, it heals, eases to a lighter tier, or worsens to a worse tier with a fresh timer, depending on the tier. Some tiers stay until treated. If your sim turns these timers off, every untreated wound stays until it is treated.

A treated wound no longer heals or worsens by itself. It goes when its recovery time ends. If you are online when a wound changes or clears, the HUD tells you.

The Status page

Open it with the Effects counter on the home screen, or Status on the Effects card of your character sheet. Where your sim uses wound tiers, or you have a wound, the top shows:

  • Wound: the tier, how long until it heals, worsens or recovers, and whether it is stabilized.
  • Max HP: and All skills: with their penalties.

In chat, @wound shows the same lines.

The buttons come next. During a fight you see Wounds can’t be treated during combat. instead.

Button Who it helps What it does Limits
Treat… Someone else Starts a recovery. The wound clears when it ends. Once per wound. The patient may pay coins.
Stabilize… Someone else Adds time before an untreated wound worsens. Once per wound, only on tiers your sim allows.
Your sim’s self-treat machine You Starts a fixed recovery. Only if your sim has one.
Song of Rest Everyone near you Halves the time left. Once a day.

Treating someone

  1. Stand within 20 metres of them, both out of a fight.
  2. On the Status page, press Treat…. It lists wounded people near you, or shows Nobody wounded within 20m.
  3. Press the button for the equipment you are using, named by your sim. Can’t be treated now means nothing fits their wound, or it is already being treated.
  4. The result comes back in chat, with the recovery time and any cost.

Things to know:

  • You can’t treat yourself, except with a self-treat machine.
  • Your sim decides which equipment can treat which tier.
  • Recovery time depends on the equipment and your medical skill. A better skill shortens it, down to a limit your sim sets.
  • If your sim charges for treatment, the patient pays coins. If they can’t afford it, nothing happens.
  • Some equipment uses up an item from the healer’s inventory.
  • The HUD doesn’t check where you are standing. Pick the equipment that matches your scene.

In chat: @wound treat <name> <tier>. The tier is I, II, III, IV, or your sim’s name for the equipment. If the word is wrong, the reply lists the ones your sim accepts.

Stabilizing

Stabilizing buys time before a wound gets worse.

  1. On the Status page, press Stabilize….
  2. Press Stabilize next to the person.

Can’t stabilize means their tier can’t be stabilized, or it already has been. You can’t stabilize yourself, or a wound that is being treated. The time added grows with your medical skill. Some sims make it use up an item.

In chat: @wound stabilize <name>. @wound stabilise works too.

Tip: A stabilized wound can still be treated later. If yours is set to worsen and no healer is free, get it stabilized first.

Your sim’s self-treat machine

If your sim has one, its button shows on the Status page while you are wounded, and asks you to confirm. It gives a fixed recovery time whatever anyone’s medical skill, and you pay its cost if your sim charges. Not every tier can use it.

In chat: @wound treat me autodoc, or your sim’s name for the machine in place of autodoc.

Song of Rest

If your sim uses it and your character knows the Song of Rest, press Song of Rest on the Status page, then SING. In chat: @wound rest.

  • It costs mana and only works out of a fight.
  • It halves the time left on the wound of everyone near you, you included, unless the wound is going to worsen.
  • You can sing it once a day, and each person can be rested once a day.
  • If nobody near you has a wound it can help, it is refused and costs nothing.

Other healing

  • Out of a fight, your HP comes back slowly while you are online, up to your max HP.
  • Healing items, under Use in your inventory, restore HP up to your max. They don’t remove a wound, and neither do items that clear debuffs.
  • If your sim uses it, too many healing items in one fight hurt you and weaken healing for the rest of it.

Sparring matches

Before Start, the fight leader can press Sparring: Off to make it Sparring: On, or type @party spar. Nobody gets a wound from the fight, and a wound you already had stays. Depending on your sim, everyone’s HP also goes back to where it was at the start, even for someone who leaves early, and nobody can loot.

What staff can do

Staff with the right permissions can clear a wound with @admin removewounds <name>. If you are still in a fight, a new wound is picked when it ends. They can also set your HP, add or remove statuses such as Bleeding, and set up the tiers, timers, equipment and costs on the website.
