Wearing the HUD

For players: picking up the HUD from the sim you play on, wearing it, and how it stays up to date.

For players

The Black Box HUD is the screen you wear in Second Life to play on a Black Box sim. You get it from the sim you play on, and you wear it whenever you play there.

Run a sim? This guide is for players. To get Black Box for your own roleplay sim, see Get the HUD for your sim.

Where it comes from

Your sim hands out the HUD in-world. There are two usual ways to get it:

  • A delivery kiosk or vendor. Touch it and it asks the Black Box server to send you the HUD. Chat says “Delivering” and the item’s name, and Second Life offers you the item.
  • From staff. Your sim’s staff can send the HUD to you from the sim’s website.

Either way, accept the item when Second Life offers it. It goes into your Second Life inventory. If it arrives in a box, unpack it first.

If you can’t find a kiosk, ask your sim’s staff where to pick up the HUD.

Wear it

  1. Find the HUD in your Second Life inventory.
  2. Right-click it and choose Wear. It attaches to your screen.
  3. Wait a few seconds while it connects. Chat shows a welcome message when you’re logged in.
  4. Click the HUD on your screen to open its panel. Click it again to close it.

The first time you wear it, the HUD makes your account and asks you to accept the Terms of Service. See Your first sign-in for what happens next.

Some regions use a Second Life experience. If your sim uses one, the HUD asks you to allow it when you arrive in that region. Say yes. If you refuse in a region that needs it, the HUD takes itself off.

Updates

You don’t need to fetch new versions yourself. Each time you put the HUD on, it checks its version with the server. If a newer HUD exists:

  1. Chat says “Hud outdated, sending update.”
  2. The server sends you the new HUD, the same way a kiosk does.
  3. The old copy stops there and won’t log in.

Accept the new HUD, take the old one off, and wear the new one. You can delete the old copy once the new one works.

Your account, characters and items are kept on the server, so nothing is lost when you change to a new copy of the HUD.

Questions about the HUD

For anything about your own sim, ask your sim’s staff first. For questions about the HUD itself, you can also ask on the Black Box Discord.
