The bank

How bank accounts, cards and PINs, ATMs, transfers, credit, interest and coin exchange work, on the HUD and on your sim's website.

For players

If your sim has a bank, your character can keep money in an account and spend it with a bank card. Use it to keep money off your character, send money to someone who isn’t nearby, and pay by card. Staff decide whether there is a bank and set its rules, so some parts below may not appear on your sim.

Where to find it

  • On the HUD: press Bank on Home, if your sim shows it. At an ATM, press Trade, then Bank, then Use ATM.
  • On the website: Bank in the main menu. If you have more than one character, pick one under Acting as.

If the bank is switched off, the HUD says “The bank is closed.” On a coin sim you type amounts in the smallest coin, and balances read as coins, largest first. On a sim with one currency, amounts are in that currency.

Open an account

  1. Open the bank as the character the account is for.
  2. On the HUD, press Open an account on the Account tab. On the website, you can type an Account name (optional), then press Ask to open an account for and your character’s name.
  3. A banker opens or refuses it. If you’re on the sim, the HUD tells you which.
  • Each character can have one personal account.
  • Account numbers look like 1234-5678.
  • An account is Requested, Open, Frozen, Closed or Refused. A frozen account can take money in but can’t pay out. Only a banker can close an account, and only when its balance is 0.
  • A group’s leaders see the group’s account too.

Bank cards

You use an account through a card. A card is an item in your inventory, shown by its last four digits, such as •••• 1234.

Get a card

Once your account is open, ask a banker for a card. When it’s issued, the HUD says so and reminds you to set a PIN.

  • A Debit card spends down to 0.
  • A Credit card can take the balance below 0, as far as the account’s credit limit. A banker can only issue one on an account that has a limit.
  • A group’s leaders can give members a card on the group’s account. It may have a daily limit, shown as “a day” next to the card.
  • A card only works while your character carries it, not from storage.

Set, change or reset a PIN

  1. Open the Cards tab.
  2. Type a New PIN (4-8 digits).
  3. Press Set PIN on the card.

To change or reset a PIN, do the same with a new one. You don’t need the old PIN. The account’s owner and the person the card was issued to can set it.

When the bank asks for the PIN:

  • If your sim requires PINs, on every payment. A card with no PIN can’t pay until you set one.
  • Otherwise, only when someone other than the person it was issued to uses a card that has a PIN.

Tip: Set a PIN even if your sim doesn’t require one. A card is an item, so it can be given away, dropped or stolen. Without a PIN, whoever carries it can spend from your account.

Wrong PINs, freezing and lost cards

  • A wrong PIN tells you how many tries are left. After a number of wrong PINs in a row, set by your sim, the card freezes and the account’s owner gets a message on the HUD.
  • Freeze stops all payments until you press Unfreeze. Unfreezing also clears the wrong-PIN count.
  • Report lost stops the card for good. Ask a banker for a new one.
  • If someone other than you pays with your card, the HUD tells you, if you’re on the sim.

The HUD’s Cards tab only lists the cards you carry. If a card was taken, open the account on the website. Its window lists every card on the account, with Freeze, Unfreeze and Report lost.

Deposits and withdrawals

  1. Stand near an ATM.
  2. Press Trade, then Bank. An ATM that’s too far away shows its distance.
  3. Press Use ATM. The bank opens on the ATM tab.
  4. Pick your Card, and type the PIN if it’s asked for.
  5. To deposit, type how many of each coin, or the Amount on a one-currency sim, and press Deposit.
  6. To withdraw, type the Amount and press Withdraw. On a coin sim you get the largest coins first.
  • A deposit needs a card too.
  • If you walk away from the ATM first, the HUD says “Go to an ATM to do that.”
  • If your sim lets you bank anywhere, the HUD has a Cash tab instead of ATM, and the website’s Move money tab can deposit and withdraw. Otherwise the website sends you to an ATM.

Send money

  1. On the HUD, open Send. On the website, open Move money.
  2. Pick your Card, with its PIN if asked.
  3. Type the account number in To account. The bank shows whose account it is, or “No open account with that number.”
  4. Type the Amount and a Note, then press Send.
  • The note shows on both statements. The other person gets a message on the HUD if they’re on the sim.
  • To pay someone standing near you by card, use Trade, then Pay. See Money and trade. If they have no account, you pay in cash.
  • If your sim locks money for new characters, you can’t send to anyone else until you reach the level it names. Moving money between your own accounts still works.
  • A debit card stops at 0 and says how much is available. A card with a daily limit says how much is left today, by server time.
  • If your sim sets an amount, transfers, card payments and withdrawals at or over it are posted to the bank’s Discord channel.

You can also pay by card at shops, on the website’s Item store, at the auction house and for crafting orders. Look for Pay with. See Buying and selling.

Your statement

On the HUD, press an account on Account to see its balance, status, credit limit and latest 20 lines. Each line shows the date, what it was (such as Card payment or Transfer in), the amount, who it was with, the note and the balance after. On the website, press an account to see the whole statement, page by page.

Credit

  1. Open your account on the HUD or the website.
  2. Type a Credit limit wanted and, if you like, Why (optional).
  3. Press Ask for credit.

A banker grants a limit or refuses. The HUD tells you, and the account shows “credit asked for” while you wait. A limit only lets a credit card go below 0. A debit card on the same account still stops at 0, so ask a banker for a credit card too.

Interest

If your sim uses interest, each account gets it once every set number of days:

  • A negative balance is charged the credit rate, rounded up. An account can have its own rate, or use the bank’s.
  • A positive balance earns the savings rate, rounded down, if your sim pays one.

Each is an Interest line on the statement. An account’s clock starts the first time the bank’s daily run sees it, so the first interest comes one full period later. With a credit limit or a negative balance, the website’s account window shows your rate under Credit limit, in the form “2.00% every 7 days”.

Exchange coins

On a coin sim with more than one coin, the Exchange tab appears at an ATM, or anywhere if your sim lets you bank anywhere.

  1. Under Give, pick a coin you have.
  2. Type How many to give.
  3. Under For, pick the coin you want.
  4. Check the preview: “You get”, any change under Back to you, and the Bank fee.
  5. Press Exchange.

You don’t need a card or an account. It’s purse to purse.

Fees

Deposits, withdrawals and transfers have no fee. The bank may keep a share of each coin exchange, if your sim sets one, and the Exchange tab says how much.

When the economy is paused

Staff can pause the economy. Everyone on the sim gets a message, with the reason if staff gave one. While it’s paused:

  • Deposits, withdrawals, transfers, card payments and exchanges are refused.
  • You can still read your accounts and statements, set a PIN, and freeze or report a card.
  • No interest is charged or paid.

The HUD tells you when the economy opens again.
