Groups and ranks
How groups, ranks and influence work, how promotions and stipends are given, and how your group changes your HUD.
For playersOn most sims your character belongs to a group, such as a faction, a crew or a household, and holds a rank in it. Each group has its own ladder of ranks, and your sim decides how you climb it.
Joining a group
Staff, or your group’s leaders, put you in a group, change your rank and move you between groups. Leaders do this on the sim’s website. Ask in character, or ask staff, how to join a group on your sim.
If your sim doesn’t use levels, the line under your name on Home shows your group and rank. Some sims let you belong to more than one group at once.
Influence and promotions
Each group gives ranks in one of three ways:
- Staff set your rank. The HUD says “Your rank here is set by staff.”
- You choose: ranks unlock as you earn influence, and you take one when you’re ready.
- Automatic: you move up as you earn influence, unless you hold your rank.
Your influence is the experience your character has earned, from roleplay, awards, events and quests. Each rank on the ladder needs a set amount. A rank without an amount is given by staff only.
When you can take a new rank, Home shows Promotion Available.
The Promotion page
Open it with the Promotion Available notice, or with Settings, then Ranks. It lists each of your groups that has promotions on.
For each group you see your rank, your influence, and the next rank with how much more you need, such as “Next: Sergeant at 500 - 120 to go”. Below that is the ladder, with Rank and Influence columns. Your rank marks where you are, and ranks you haven’t reached show how much more they need.
To change rank:
- Press Take next to a rank you’ve earned.
- Press Yes, take it.
You can take any rank you’ve earned, up or down. Your influence stays the same, so you can move again whenever you like. If staff gave you a rank above your influence, stepping down from it means you can’t take it back until you’ve earned enough.
In an automatic group, Hold my rank stops the automatic promotions. It then reads ✔ Holding my rank, and you only move when you choose. Press it again to let promotions carry on.
Some groups split into paths partway up the ladder. When you reach the split, the page says “Pick your path”, and the rank you take decides it. Ranks on the other path aren’t offered after that, and swapping sides later is up to staff.
Stipends
A group can pay its members a regular stipend: an item or coins, every so many days. It can go to the whole group or to one rank.
- You get it if you’ve played that character during the period.
- Each payment comes one period after the last. A period you missed isn’t paid later in a lump.
- If the stipend comes out of the group’s bank account, it goes into your own bank account when you have one, and to you as cash when you don’t.
- If you’re on the sim when it’s paid, your HUD tells you.
Your group on the HUD
Your group can change how the HUD looks:
- Theme: each group can have its own HUD theme, with its own art, buttons and colours. Your HUD wears your group’s theme. Without a group, it wears your sim’s default theme.
- Name colour: if your sim uses group colours, the name over your head is in your group’s colour. If your sim lets you join several groups, the titler can list each one in its own colour.
A group can also have its own rules for fights. A fight led by one of its members uses them. See Your turn for how fights work.
You can post a bounty on behalf of your group, too. See Events and rewards.
