Dice and skill checks
How to roll on the HUD's Dice page and with @roll, what each roll shows in chat, and how checks work in fights and quest talks.
For playersYou roll dice when your roleplay needs chance to decide something: a free roll of any dice, or a named check your sim has set up. You can roll on the HUD’s Dice page or with @roll in chat. Those rolls show in local chat with an ID, so everyone nearby sees them and staff can check them later.
The Dice page
Press Dice on Home. The page has:
- Dice: how many dice in one roll, from 1 to 100. Use - and +, or type a number.
- Times: how many times to roll that set, from 1 to 10.
- Stat: NONE, or a stat whose value on your character is added to the total.
- A row of dice buttons: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100. Each button shows the number from Dice, so with 3 dice they read 3d4, 3d6 and so on.
- Check and Roll check, if your sim has named checks for your character.
- A box underneath that shows your last roll.
Roll dice
- Set Dice to how many dice you want.
- Set Times if you want to roll the same set more than once, for example four lots of 3d10.
- Pick a Stat to add, or leave it on NONE.
- Press the die you want.
The box shows the result. One set reads like “12 (5, 7)”: the total, then each die. With a stat it adds the stat once to the total, as in “12 (5, 7) + 2 = 14”. If you rolled several sets, each one gets its own line, such as “#1 7 (3, 4)”, and the last line gives the Total.
Local chat shows the same roll with your character’s name and your username:
<Character> (<username>) has rolled 2d6 + Strength (2) and got a 12 (5, 7) + 2 = 14.
ID:<roll ID>
A die button greys out for a moment after you press it, so one tap is one roll.
When a roll is refused
The reason shows in red in the result box, and nothing goes to chat.
- Dice times Times can’t be more than 100. Ten sets of 20 dice says “That’s 200 dice. Max is 100 dice in one roll.”
- “That roll didn’t go through.” means something went wrong on the way. Try again, and tell staff if it keeps happening.
Named checks
Your sim can set up named checks, such as a skill or a save. Each one is a formula your sim wrote: dice plus the stats and skills it names. A skill counts by its code, which you can see beside it on the Skills card of your character’s page on the website, if your sim uses skill pools. If your sim has checks for your character, the Check list and Roll check button appear on the Dice page.
- Pick the check from Check.
- Press Roll check.
The box shows the check’s name, then the total with the working in brackets. Local chat says your character’s name, “rolls”, the check’s name and the result, with an ID. Your stats and skills are added for you: the Dice, Times and Stat boxes don’t count for a check.
If the box says “That check’s formula doesn’t work - tell staff.”, the check is broken on your sim’s side. Let your sim’s staff know which one.
@roll in chat
Type @roll on your command channel. See Chat commands for how commands work.
| You type | What it rolls |
|---|---|
@roll 1d20 |
One twenty-sided die. |
@roll 1d20 + 3 |
One d20, with 3 added. |
@roll 1d20 - 2 |
One d20, with 2 taken off. |
@roll 2d6 + 1 : sneak attack |
Two d6, each with 1 added, and a note. |
The first number is how many dice, up to 100. The number after the d is how many sides, up to 1000. Spaces don’t matter, so @roll 1d20+3 works too. A note goes after a colon and shows after the dice in chat.
What chat shows
Everyone nearby sees the roll in local chat:
<Character> (<username>) rolls 2d6 + 1 sneak attack
(3, 5) - Unmodified
(4, 6) - Modified
ID:<roll ID>
The Unmodified line is each die as it fell. The Modified line is each die with your bonus or penalty. With no bonus or penalty you only get the Unmodified line. @roll doesn’t add the dice up, so add them yourself if your roleplay needs a total.
Tip:
@rolladds its bonus to every die, while the Dice page adds a stat once to the total.@roll 2d6 + 1is two dice each with +1. For one bonus on the total, roll on the Dice page with a Stat.
If @roll doesn’t work
Only you see these replies:
- “You did not format the command right. 1d20, 1d20 + 3 or 2d6 - 1 : note are examples.” Check the order: dice first, then the bonus, then the note.
- “Too many dice or sides requested. Max is 100 dice, 1000 sides.”
- “No active character. Go make one.” You need a character before you can roll.
The roll ID and dice history
Every roll from the Dice page, a check or @roll ends with “ID:” and a long code. The roll is saved with that ID, your character and the time. Your sim’s staff can paste the ID into the Dice history on your sim’s website to check the roll is real and see exactly what it showed. On some sims you can open the dice history too.
Rolls made for you in a fight or a quest talk aren’t saved in the dice history.
Checks in fights
In a fight the HUD rolls for you. When you attack, local chat says who rolls to hit whom, HIT or MISSED, and the two numbers, for example “Rolled 15 and beat a 12”. Under that come the Attack Roll and Defense Roll lines, which show what went into each number. CRIT PASS and CRIT FAIL show when a roll is a critical. If your sim counts a tie as a hit, chat says your roll “met” the defence.
Other rolls in a fight, such as getting clear of an area attack, show your total against the number you needed in brackets, as in “(14 vs 12)”. See Your turn.
Checks in quest talks
When you talk to a character in a quest, some answers need a roll. Those answers carry a tag with the check’s name and the number to reach, such as “Persuasion vs 13”.
- Pick the answer. The HUD rolls your sim’s formula for that check, with your stats and skills.
- The talk shows the result, such as “Persuasion: 15 vs 13”, and Success or Failed.
You succeed if your result meets or beats the number. The talk then goes one way on a success and another on a failure. Some checks only give you one try: once you’ve rolled, that answer doesn’t come back. See Quests and NPCs.
