Quests and NPCs

How to talk to NPCs and quest props, answer them, follow your quests in the journal and collect rewards.

For players

If your sim has quests, you take part by talking. The people you talk to are NPCs, characters the sim plays, and quest props, such as a notice board or a letter. Your answers move the story on.

Start a talk

  1. Wear your HUD and have an active character.
  2. Walk up to the NPC or prop, within 2 metres.
  3. Touch it. The talk opens on your HUD.

If you’re too far away, chat says “You are not close enough to interact with this.” On some sims, objects you already use, such as a door or a console, show quest choices in their menu too.

The talk

The top of the talk shows who’s speaking. Below it, a QUEST line names the quest this talk belongs to and the stage you’re at. Then come their words, and above them any notes about what has happened, such as a quest starting or an item changing hands.

Your answers are numbered. Press one to choose it.

  • A locked choice shows a padlock and what it needs, such as “Level 5”. Pressing it tells you what you’re missing.
  • A choice with a roll shows a die and the check, such as “Persuasion vs 13”. When you pick one, the HUD rolls for you and shows the result above the next line, such as “Persuasion: 15 vs 13”, marked Success or Failed. You need to meet or beat the number. A failed roll can take the talk somewhere else. Some rolls can be tried only once, and the choice disappears after that.
  • Leave ends the talk. Done closes it at the end.
  • Ignore closes the dialog without answering.

If you choose something that needs an item or money you don’t have, nothing happens and you’re told why. A choice either does everything it says or nothing at all.

You can make the talk bigger under Settings, then Display. See The Home screen.

The quest journal

Open the journal with Quests on Home, if your sim shows it, or from your character sheet: press Character, then Journal on the Quests card.

For each quest you’re on, the journal shows:

  • its name and the stage you’ve reached
  • what to do next
  • Talk to and a name, when someone is waiting for you
  • Carrying, for each quest item you hold

To give up a quest, press Abandon, then ABANDON to confirm. Its quest items are lost.

When you’ve finished quests, Show finished lists them. A tick means completed and a cross means failed. Hide finished folds the list away again.

Rewards

A quest pays out as you go: when you make a choice, reach a stage or finish it. Depending on how your sim built the quest, you can get:

  • experience
  • items, or money
  • quest items, which exist for the quest and show in your journal
  • a perk
  • a new class
  • a rank in a group, or standing with a group

Some choices take things too, such as items or coins you hand over. What you got shows in the talk above the next line, or in a last message with Done. If your class changes, the HUD reloads when the talk ends.

Items you receive go into your inventory. Ranks and standing are covered in Groups and ranks.
