Levels, perks and respecs
How experience turns into levels, how to spend stat and perk points, and how respecs, skill pools and professions work.
For playersIf your sim uses levelling, your character gains levels by earning experience. A level up can give you stat points, perk points or both, and you spend them on the HUD. A respec hands the points back so you can spend them again. Your sim sets almost all of this, so some parts below may not apply to you.
Experience and levels
Your sim’s staff set a level chart. It says how much experience each level needs and how many perk points each level gives. Your sim also decides how many stat points you get: some give points every level, others only every few levels.
When your experience reaches the next level, a level up is waiting for you. It doesn’t happen by itself: you finish it on the HUD. If your experience has passed more than one level, one level up takes you to the highest level you’ve reached, with all the points in between.
Your experience shows at the top of your character’s page on your sim’s website. Each change to it is listed under History, Experience log.
Level up
Find out if one is waiting
- Home shows the notice Level Up Available. Press it to open the Level Up page.
- Type
@profile checklevelon your command channel. Chat tells you, for example, “You can level up to level 4, with 1 stat point to spend. Open Level Up on your HUD.” or “No level up or respec needed.”
If your sim lets players re-spend stat points at any time, Level Up Available stays on Home, and the page lets you move points whenever you like.
Spend stat points
- Press Level Up Available on Home.
- The box at the top shows Stat Points and how many are left. Each stat has + to add a point, - to take one back, and ? to show what the stat does.
- Spend every point, so Stat Points reads 0.
- Press Save. The HUD goes back to Home.
Saving sets your new level, fills your bars up to their new maximum and updates your titler.
Some levels give no stat points. The page then says, for example, “No stat points at level 5. Save to reach it.” Press Save anyway to take the level. If it says “There’s nothing to spend stat points on here yet. Ask staff.”, your sim has no stats set up for level ups.
If your sim gives both kinds of points, this page takes the stat points. Perk points are spent separately.
Keep stats
Your sim decides whether a level up can move points you’ve already spent. If it keeps stats, - stops at what each stat was before the level up, so you can only add. If it doesn’t, you can take points out of one stat and put them in another. A respec frees all of them either way.
If Save does nothing
If the save is refused, the HUD stays on the page without a message. Check that:
- Stat Points is at 0. You have to spend every point.
- You’re not in a fight. You can’t level up during one.
- No stat is above your sim’s cap, if it has one. + lets you go past the cap, but Save won’t go through.
Perk points
If your sim uses perk picks, Home shows Perk points: and a number when you have some to spend. Press it, or go to Settings, Perks.
The Perks page lists the perks a level up can give. The ones you can pick now come first, then the ones you already have, then the rest, greyed out with a line saying what they still need, such as Needs and a level, or No perk points. Each perk shows its rank if it has more than one (for example 1/3), the level it needs, what it does, and any abilities it gives after Gives:.
- Press Pick beside a perk.
- The HUD asks if you want to take it and reminds you: “It costs a perk point. Only a respec takes it back.”
- Press Yes, take it, or Back to change your mind.
Perk points count up to the level you’ve saved. Finish your level up first, and the new level’s perk points appear afterwards.
If your sim uses it: Some sims have you spend perk points on the Level Up page instead. It shows Perk Points with + and - beside each perk, and Save. The - stops at what you already had, so a perk you’ve saved stays.
Respecs
What a respec resets
- Every stat point goes back to 0, ready to spend again on the HUD.
- If your sim uses skill pools, your skills go back to 0 and unlock.
- If your sim uses perk picks, the perks you picked at level ups come off and you get those perk points back. Perks you were given stay.
Your level, experience, class and items don’t change.
Who can respec, and what it costs
| Your sim’s setting | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Staff only | Only staff can respec your character. Ask them. |
| Players can respec | Your character’s page on the website has a Respec card. |
| Re-spend any time | You can also move your stat points on the HUD’s Level Up page at any time, without a respec. |
| Class change | You can also change class, in Details on the character page or with @profile setclass <class>. In chat, only to a class your race could pick at creation, and not during a fight. |
| Cost | Your own respec costs coins, taken from that character. |
| Wait | You wait a number of days between your own respecs. |
| Free below a level | Below that level your respec is free, has no wait, and doesn’t start one. |
Respecs done by staff are always free and don’t count towards your wait.
Respec on the website
- Sign in to your sim’s website. See Your sim’s website.
- Open your character’s page and the Details tab. Find the Respec card. It says what a respec resets and any cost or wait.
- Press Respec, read what it costs, and press Respec again. It can’t be undone.
While you’re waiting between respecs, the card shows the date you can respec again and the button is greyed out. A paid respec also fails if the character doesn’t have the coins.
STATS UNLOCKED
After a respec of your active character, chat says “Your character has been respeced. You can now redistribute your stat points.” If your sim shows it, your titler adds a STATS UNLOCKED line while you’re in character. It stays until you spend the points: open Level Up, spend every point and press Save. The line goes as soon as the save goes through.
On a sim without stat points, a respec only frees your skills and the titler line never shows.
Tip: If Home doesn’t show Level Up Available when you expect it, type
@profile checklevel. If chat says a level up or respec is waiting and the notice still isn’t there, tell your sim’s staff.
Skills on the website
If your sim uses skill pools, your character’s page has a Skills card under Stats & skills. Each pool has its own points, for example “3 of 5 left”. Each skill shows its code, a row of dots for its rank, and - and +.
- Spend every point in every pool. Until you do, the card says “Spend all of every pool’s points to save.”
- Press Save skills, then Save.
Your skills are then locked until a respec. You can’t change them during a fight. Your sim sets each pool’s points, and your class can change them. Your sim’s checks use a skill’s code to add it to a roll: see Dice and skill checks.
Professions
If your sim uses profession rules, go to Settings, Professions. The page marks your main profession and your sub-profession, and shows each skill as your level over the most you can reach.
- Main profession: usually the one you picked when you made your character. It can go the highest.
- Sub-profession: from a level your sim sets, you can take up one more crafting profession. Choose it under Pick one, press Take up, then Yes, take it up. You only get one, and it stops at a skill your sim sets. If you can’t pick yet, the page says why.
- Gathering skills stop at a cap unless your main profession raises them.
To change your main profession, find a letter of indenture in Inventory, press Use letter, read what it will do and press USE LETTER. The letter is used up, and your old main profession and its skill are gone.
